How to Buy UV Clothing

It’s no secret that the sun’s rays can be very damaging, causing skin cancer, premature aging and wrinkles. It is important to protect yourself by religiously using sunscreen and wearing UV clothing.

UV clothing is clothing manufactured using an ultraviolet (UV) protective fabric.  The industry categorizes UV clothing using the UV Protection Factor (UPF), which is very similar to the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) used for rating sunscreens.  UPF essentially measures the amount of UV rays that are able to pass through the fabrics when exposed to the UV radiation.  Most regular, lightweight clothing provides a UPF of five, whereas UV clothing can provide an UPF of up to 50+. Any clothing rating 50+ is considered to provide excellent protection, whereas a UPF of only 15 or 20 is considered to provide good protection.

Manufacturers of UV clothing design them to cover and protect the vulnerable areas of your body like your neck, uppers arms, shoulders and legs.

When researching the various UV clothing provided on the market, ensure the following:

  • Clothing should provide a sun protection factor of 50+.
  • Garment should protect vulnerable areas of your body like shoulders, chest and neck.
  • Clothing should have certification as to its testing standards and sun protection factor.
  • Choose clothing in cotton or linen fabrics for ultimate comfort and coolness.
