Safety Tips for Sun Protection

SUN SAFE TIPS FROM THE SKIN CANCER FOUNDATION

Teach your children good sun protection habits at an early age: The damage that leads to adult skin cancer starts in childhood!

  • Avoid unnecessary sun exposure, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM, the peak hours for harmful ultraviolet radiation.
  • When outdoors, use sunscreens rated SPF 15 or higher. Apply them liberally, uniformly, and frequently.
  • Wear sun protective clothing when exposed to sunlight. The average T-Shirt is equivalent to SPF 5.
  • Stay away from artificial tanning devices.
  • Do not sunbathe!
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe at least once every three months.

  • Just two or three blistering sunburns during childhood can double the risk of skin cancer
  • The majority of lifetime sun damage occurs before age 18
  • One in 5 Americans will contract skin cancer in the course of a lifetime
  • More than a million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year
  • Nationally, there are more new cases of skin cancer each year than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon
  • More than half of all new cancers are skin cancers
  • One person dies every hour from skin cancer, primarily melanoma
  • One in four persons who develop skin cancer is under the age of 40
  • Melanoma kills more young women than any other cancer
  • Utilizing proven cancer prevention and early detection techniques could eliminate at least 100,000 cancer cases and 60,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. each year
