Back in the summer of 2016, Kentucky Fried Chicken confused a lot of people by offering KFC Extra Crispy Sunscreen.
It sounds like a joke, right?
First of all, why would you want your sunscreen to leave you extra crispy? Sunscreen with SPF of at least 15-30 should be used daily to protect your skin from UV rays. You should wear sun protective clothing so that you don’t become extra crispy.
It wasn’t a joke. KFC Extra Crispy Sunscreen was a promotional giveaway that was very real. Within a few hours of the announcement, the 3,000 available bottles of sunscreen were spoken for.
The lucky winners can now slather on sunscreen that makes them smell like fried chicken. We’re not even kidding.
Did this promotion go too far?
KFC’s chief marketing officer, Kevin Hochman, did point out that it was a far-fetched idea. He said, "While I'd love to tell you our customers have been asking for this, they haven't. In fact, I'm pretty confident nobody ever asked for this. It's just some crazy idea we dreamed up. "
We’re not sure if the SPF rating on the bottle is legitimate. The FDA has specific compliance guidelines for sunscreen, after all.
It doesn’t really matter, because you would have to pay a hefty price to get a hold of a bottle anyway. KFC Extra Crispy Sunscreen is selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay.
