How to style a tunic

Tunics are a miraculous style saver. Whether or not you think wearing leggings as pants is appropriate, you can throw on a tunic and save yourself from the argument altogether. There are plenty of other ways to wear tunics as well.

With workout gear

Although tunics over leggings are a given, they can also be styled with workout wear. If you won’t have time to shower after you hit the gym, throw a tunic over your tank and exercise capris. You’ll still look put-together, but you won’t have to stress about your style as you frolic around town. Don’t forget to trade your sneakers for some flats or flip flops!

Over skinny jeans

More unexpected than leggings, skinny jeans have the slim silhouette to wear with a tunic. This look gives you lots of options. You can cuff the jeans and wear them with heels or throw on knee-high boots and lacy boot cuffs for a cozier look. Wear a tunic with white jeans and flats for a crisp, clean and summery look.

Over boot-cut jeans

When worn with straight, boot-cut or flare jeans, a tunic provides a more vintage look. It’s slimming around your hips and balances out the width of the pant leg. Just don’t wear a tunic over a chunky belt; it can take away from the clean lines created by your outfit.

As a dress

No matter what your age, everyone can get away with wearing a tunic as a dress when you’re on vacation. Wear a bathing suit underneath it, of course. It’s easy to throw on as a beach cover-up when you’ve had too much sun or you’re heading to the Tiki bar for a cocktail. A tunic makes an itsy-bitsy bikini more appropriate when you’re not at the beach, but it’s still cool and casual for nighttime on an island. Throw some fabulous statement jewelry on with the tunic to take it from day to night.

With short shorts

The layered look isn’t just for tops. A tunic that skims the hem of your shorts will draw attention to your legs. This is ideal if you have great gams. Wear flats during the day, or dress the look up with heels at night.

A tunic is one of the most adaptable style elements you can wear. It’s beachwear, casual wear and post-workout wear in one. It can be preppy or boho, it can be slouchy or refined, but no matter what, it’s fashionable and flattering.
